Psychology Foundation
PYC 5000 Social
Psychology- Theory and research in individual and
group social psychology.
Special stress on interpersonal dynamics between health care
givers and their clients.
PYC 5010 Psychopathology- Survey of theory and research in
personality and abnormal behavior.
PYC 5020
Lifespan Development- This course focuses on an in-depth study of developmental
processes and learning principles throughout the
lifespan. Theory and research relevant to social, emotional, intellectual and
physical development are examined. Application of developmentally-based
counseling strategies and interventions are explored and utilized. (To be taken
by Addiction Studies Majors)
PYC 5030
Statistics- The course is designed to introduce students to some of the
statistical methods
available for the examination and analysis of the
data relevant to the behavioral and health sciences. It is neither a "how
to" course nor a course in math. Rather, it is aimed at an intermediate
level of understanding which should make statistics and the reasoning behind
their use understandable to the student. The course also requires the use of
the computer software package SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social
Sciences).
PYC
5040 Advanced
Research Methods- Advanced research design and
methodology in psychology, focusing on appropriateness of methodology,
including validity issues and practical applications.
Note: While PYC
5030 is not a formal prerequisite, students are strongly encouraged to complete
PYC 5030 prior to taking PYC 5040.
PYC 6030
Psychopathology of
Children- An in-depth
analysis of children with learning and
behavior difficulties. Theories
of causation, assessment strategies, alternative intervention techniques and
classroom management approaches.

Prerequisite- Completion of PYC 5010 with
a minimum grade of B- and in good standing or instructor and director
permission.
Addiction Studies
ADS 5090
Drugs and Behavior-
Introduction to drugs and their impact on human functioning with
emphasis given to the development of addictions.
ADS 5110 Theories
of Addiction- This second course in a series of three
presumes a basic
understanding of the various drugs of addiction. It is
a reflective exploration of the personal and social meaning of addiction and a
critical appraisal of the theories developed to explain it. An important
diagnostic component is included in the course.
Prerequisite- Completion of
ADS 5090 with a minimum B- grade or instructor permission.
ADS 5120 Recovery Processes- This third course in a series of three graduate courses
concerned with addictions. This one focuses on recovery, with particular
emphasis on treatment methods, relapse prevention, community resources, and
special populations. A laboratory component is included.
Prerequisite: Completion of ADS 5110 with a
minimum B- grade or instructor permission.
Clinical Child Psychology
PYC 5420 Child/Adolescent
Development- Fundamental theories, principles of
development and
research
trends as they apply to child and adolescent development.
PYC 5320 Individual Psychotherapy with
Children- Introduction to theory and practice of
psychotherapy with children.
Prerequisite-
PYC 5300 and PYC 5420 with a minimum of B- grades and in good standing or
instructor and director permission.
PYC 5430 Family Therapy- Application of therapeutic principles to therapeutic
practices for families.
Prerequisite-
PYC 5300 with a minimum B- grade and in good standing or instructor and
director permission.

theory
and practice of testing and measurement of cognitive processes,
especially
intelligence and personality.

Methods II: Projective Measurement- Theory and practice of projective
testing.
Prerequisite- PYC 5200 with a

Methods with Children- Comprehensive introduction to assessment methods
and practices used in the evaluation of children and
adolescents.
Prerequisite- PYC 5210 with a minimum
grade of B- and in good standind or instructor and

Therapeutic Component
PYC 5300 Therapeutic
Interventions I: Individual- Exploration of the
development of
psychotherapy/counseling methods and intervention procedures at
theoretical, research-based and experiential levels. Critical issues in
individual, group and family-systems approaches.

minimum of 500 clock hours supervised practice in mental health agencies which
employ fully-licensed psychologists.
